Outsiders sometimes think of Madison County as just Huntsville and a lot of countryside. Locals know better. Here is a short tour of the communities that make up Madison County, and a few notes on what makes each one worth knowing.
The county seat and commercial hub, Huntsville is where the county does its official business and most of its shopping. It is covered in depth in our dedicated Huntsville guide, but it anchors everything else: when people in the smaller communities say they are going to town, this is the town they mean.
Kingston is a small community in the rolling hills toward the eastern side of the county, near the headwaters country of the War Eagle and Kings river systems. It is the kind of place where the surrounding landscape is the main event: quiet roads, scattered farms, and the deep green of the Ozarks in every direction.
Combs is a tiny community tucked into the Boston Mountains in the southern part of the county, along the Highway 23 corridor known as the Pig Trail. It is deeply rural and beautiful, surrounded by the kind of steep, forested terrain that defines the southern county. Combs also holds a notable place in Arkansas history as the home country of one of the state's most prominent and most debated governors, Orval Faubus.
Wesley is a small community in the western part of the county, closer to the northwest Arkansas metro. Its position has made it one of the areas feeling the gentle pull of growth from the larger towns to the west, even as it keeps its rural feel.
Hindsville sits in the northern part of the county, in the War Eagle Creek country. The famous War Eagle Mill and its renowned craft fairs are just downstream from Hindsville along War Eagle Creek, making this small community a gateway to one of the region's best-known destinations.
St. Paul is a historic community in the southern part of the county and a key access point to the Kings River. For paddlers and anglers, St. Paul is the launching point for trips on one of the prettiest rivers in the Ozarks. The community has deep roots and a strong sense of its own history.
Beyond these, Madison County is dotted with other communities and historic place-names: Elkins on the western edge, plus old settlements like Marble, Aurora, Delaney, Clifty, Drakes Creek, and Witter, some of them barely a name and a few houses today, each with its own story.
