Hunting in Madison County: Seasons, Game, and Getting Started

Hunting is woven deep into the culture of Madison County. The mix of forested hills, farm edges, river bottoms, and large blocks of public land in and around the Ozark National Forest makes this some of the best hunting country in Arkansas. For newcomers and visiting hunters, here is an orientation to what is here and how to get started, the right way.

What You Can Hunt

White-tailed deer are the headline game in Madison County, and deer season is a genuine community event here, the time of year when camps fill up and the whole rhythm of the county shifts. Wild turkey is the other marquee species, hunted in the spring, and the county also offers small game like squirrel and rabbit, plus furbearers and waterfowl in season. Notably, the Ozark region has a healthy and growing black bear population, and bear hunting has become an increasingly important part of the Arkansas hunting calendar.

Public Land

One of the great advantages of hunting in this part of Arkansas is the sheer amount of public land. The Ozark National Forest covers a large portion of the southern half of Madison County, and several state Wildlife Management Areas are within easy reach. That means a hunter without access to private ground still has thousands of acres of legal, accessible hunting country. Public land hunting takes more scouting and effort, but the opportunity here is excellent.

Know the Rules First

Before you head out, the single most important step is to understand the current regulations. The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission sets seasons, zone boundaries, bag limits, and equipment rules, and these change from year to year. Madison County falls within a specific deer zone, and the dates and limits for that zone, along with turkey and bear seasons, are published by the AGFC each year. Always confirm the current season dates, zone designation, and limits with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission before hunting. You will also need the proper license and any required permits, and on public land there may be additional rules.

Getting Local Knowledge

Madison County hunters tend to be private about their best spots, and you can hardly blame them. But the local hunting culture is real and welcoming to those who show respect for the land and the traditions. A conversation at a local feed store, processor, or sporting goods counter is the time-honored way to start learning the country. Guides and outfitters operate in the region for those who want a faster start. And the local Facebook groups are full of hunters who share advice, even if they keep their honey holes to themselves.

Hunt Responsibly

Good hunters are good stewards. Get permission before hunting private land, every time. Respect property lines and gates. Follow fair-chase ethics and all regulations. Practice safe firearm and stand handling. And take care of the resource so that the deer, turkey, and bear remain abundant for the next generation of Madison County hunters. The tradition here is strong because the people who carry it take it seriously.

For anyone willing to learn the country and follow the rules, Madison County offers hunting as good as anywhere in the state, right in the heart of the Ozarks.
